The suspected gunman accused of killing two people and injuring four others at at North Carolina university has been named by police.
Trystan Andrew Terrell, 22, is alleged to have opened fire on students in a classroom at UNC Charlotte before being detained by police officers.
He was taken into custody and charges against him are pending, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said, following the horrifying scenes that unfolded on Tuesday.
Local media reported that Terrell was a student at the university but officials have yet to confirm this.
Campus Police Chief Jeff Baker said two people were killed and three remained in critical condition late on Tuesday.
He added that a fourth person’s injuries were less serious and that students were among the victims but would not confirm how many.
Mr Baker said authorities received a call in the late afternoon that a suspect armed with a pistol had shot several students.
Officers assembling nearby for a concert rushed to the classroom building and arrested the gunman in the room where the shooting took place.
